Change serpentine belt for 2002 Pontiac Grand AM GT?

Do I have to release the engine mounts and jack up the engine a little in order to replace the serpentine belt? +3|||The engine actually needs to be lowered a bit, and can be supported by a jack. It%26#039;s easier if you loosen the bolts, then only take one out at a time as you take the belt off. To loosen the tensioner it%26#039;s a 3/8%26quot; breaker bar. It can be done with a regular 3/8%26quot; ratchet, but it%26#039;s a pain to fit it in there. The long thin breaker bar makes it a piece of cake.|||Find the Belt tensioner, It is spring loaded. I believe a 1/2 inch ratchet or breaker bar to push back against the spring.. If you have the new belt there with you when taking old one off, it will be alot easier to remember the belt direction in case you dont have the sticker on the core support.|||No, just find the tensioner and release the tension on the band.





If its a 3.4 engine it will have a belt routing picture where the belt is.


If its a 3.8 i believe it should be somewhere on the left side, next to the belt anyway.

Is it more important to change antifreeze or serpentine belt?

I got my oil changed today, and the guy told me I need a new serpentine belt and I need new antifreeze. I can only afford to get one thing at a time. What is more important?|||I don%26#039;t know what the temp. is where you are but with it being winter I would go with antifreeze first. A serpentine belt will run a long time even if it has cracks in it. if it brake%26#039;s your are stopped in your tracks. but no major damage.





if the block cracks from freezing it will cost a lot to fix you car.but you can get an antifreeze tester at an auto parts store to see what temp. your antifreeze is good for. to help choose you option.

1. make sure you car is cold


2. take off the radiator cap


use the antifreeze tester to check you antifreeze|||You can buy anti-freeze and do it yourself. If the coolant that is in it looks nasty, then you might want to drain it, flush it out, and then fill it with new coolant. Either get pre-mixed (water/coolant) or buy 100% coolant and mix it yourself (never run 100% coolant by itself, and NEVER run just water).





As far as the serpentine belt, if you are mechanically inclined, it usually isn%26#039;t that difficult - there will be a tensioner that you have to figure out how to release, and the belt just comes off (you might have to remove some stuff to get to it though).





I usually just wait for belts like that to fail (in most cases the belt doesn%26#039;t fail - it will be the tensioner, or one of the accessories that will fail, and take the belt with it.





If you don%26#039;t want to mess with it, call around and get quotes.|||Serpentine Belt - If this fails, you may lose power steering, charging system, and air conditioning. The engine may overheat, become hard to steer and the battery will eventually go dead. A broken serpentine belt can also cause the timing belt to jump and do internal engine damage.





Engine Coolant (Antifreeze) - Coolant loses it%26#039;s ability to protect the engine against corrosion and freezing. It should be replaced every 30,000 miles or so, depending on the type of coolant. It%26#039;s unlikely the coolant will %26quot;fail%26quot;, it just offers less protection.





My recommendation is to have the shop tell you which is more urgent. There are different levels severity when it comes to a part needing replacement. I use the 1-5 system, 1 = needs replacement now, may fail very soon! 5 = brand new part! Have them tell you the severity of the condition. A good shop will prioritize this for you, if they wont, consider a second opinion.|||Changing the antifreeze in your cooling system is a good idea and will promote longer life of your engine. You should try to have this done (with a flush) every couple of years.





However, if the mechanic told you your serpentine belt needs replacing, you should give that priority. If this belt is cracked and/or badly worn and ends up breaking, you will be stuck towing your car to a garage. This will mean more expense and probable inconvenience. If you trust that this mechanic told you the truth (or you looked and the belt looks bad), I would definitely do that one first!|||You probably don%26#039;t need either. They make their money by ripping off the public.





How long has the belt/antifreeze been in the car?





If longer than a few years, get the antifreeze changed first b/c if it%26#039;s bad you risk having the water freeze and the block cracking or the water pump being damaged. You can have it checked elsewhere ( it%26#039;s only a specific gravity check). Anti freeze is now used all year and I never change mine. Next, remove the air cleaner box and its connecting hose to the throttle body, to give yourself more room to work in the front of the engine.





I had to remove both the electrical and mechanical fans. The elect fan has a connecting wire and a couple of screws holding it to the radiator cross piece. The mechanical fan is a pain in the b*tt to remove - there is very little clearance between the radiator and fan blade assembly, so you need to use box or open-ended wrenches to loosen each bolt. This step takes the most time so be patient.


You also need to loosen the bolts holding the power steering pump on the driver%26#039;s side. One is holding bolt and the other is a long tensioner bolt which is positioned horigzontally under the PS pump, which screws in %26amp; out out to tighten/loosen the serp. belt.


When the belt is loose enough, slide it off all the pulleys, replace it with your new belt according to the diagram and retighten the belt at the PS pump. Then replace all the hardware, fans and air filter box and you are done.

Usually there is a sticker under the hood that shows the route the belt is supposed to go. If there isn%26#039;t you can go to autozone.com and look up repairs for your vehicle and it should show you the way the belt goes. One thing to remember is the side of the belt with the grooves in it match up with the pullies with the grooves in them. You put the smooth side of the belt against the smooth side of the pullies. It will be much easier if you can get a serpentine belt tool to use. If there is an autozone or advance auto parts near you they have tools to loan out. Other big chain parts stores may do the same thing.|||Yes you can. But I have a 99 cherokee, and it took me and my best friend to get the nut lose on the tensioner, so I dont think you could do it alone. It was really on there.


Its not a regular tensioner pulley, and it would take a while for me to explain it, and for you to find what Im talking about.


It has a bolt to hold the pulley in place, right through the pulley, and another bolt through the backside of the pulley that pulls it inward when tightened.|||$60? If this includes the cost of the belt, let them do it. It%26#039;s not a difficult DIY but not worth the time and bloody knuckles for $60.

these items are based on regular maintenance intervals|||When you see small cracks in it.|||The Saturn folks will tell you to replace it every 60k. Personally, I replace stuff when it breaks. I have 170k on my 2001 Saturn S Series... no problems.





Do this - take a look at the belt a couple of different times (it%26#039;ll stop in different places each time). How does it look? Frayed, cracked? If so, replace it... if not, don%26#039;t

The belt is cracked so it needs to be done,we really need the dependable ride. What I am wondering is, does anything need to come off to get the belt on, being a transverse mounted engine? And if so, do all I need to do is loosen up the idler pulley?? and what does that entail? Any and all feedback is appreciated.|||i did one a bunch of years back but all i remember is you need a 1/2 inch ratchet and a 3/8 loosen the pully stick the 1/2 in the hole and it will loosen just do the opposit with the new belt and dont tighten it too tight i do remember that replacing the spark plugs sucked on one side you have to go in the wheel openings|||I use a 3/8 ratchet and a cheater pipe and put it in the square hole in the idler pully and pull, I use the cheater as not to bust my knuckles in a small space.

How do I change the serpentine belt on my 2001 Toyota?

I see that there are 2 bolts on the tension releaser: one is part of the casing so I know I need to crank on that to release the tension to remove and re-install the belt, and the other one is in the center of the tension release unit and looks like it may hold it in place.





So, my quesiton is whether I need to loosen the bolt in the middle before releasing the tension to remove and replace the belt.





Thanks!|||Sounds like nobody ever broke anything in here, man. by the way you%26#039;re not gonna mess anything up just follow my directions. when pulling it off, loosen up the bolt in the center of the pulley, that will allow the pulley to move, then loosen up the bolt on the side( which is the tensioner), loosen it far enough for the belt to come free. when you put it back on, tighten the bolt on the side first, when you notice the belt is tight, tighten up the bolt in the center of the pulley and that should be it. no big deal . start the car up, nosquealing ... you%26#039;re good. go get yourself some TacoBell and spend them bucks you would of had to pay a mechanic to do it for you.|||It would be best if you don%26#039;t take anyone%26#039;s advice about HOW to do it. 1985 Cadillac Deville. I have the belt mounted on all the pulleys but the tensioner. I can%26#039;t seem to get the tensioner pulley to budge. any suggestions?|||slip a 2-3 foot long pipe over your wrench. you need lots of leverage the release the tension|||well i don%26#039;t know if its the same on your as on my 98 Chevy Silverado but on the tensioner pulley you should see a square hole where the pulley itself is, you can just out a socket ratchet wrench in that without a socket and then crank down on it, makes it real easy, on mine you use a 1/2%26quot; drive ratchet, probably the same size on yours but might be a different ratchet size like a 3/4%26quot;, wouldn%26#039;t be 1/4%26quot; because that would be to small but i wouldn%26#039;t rule it out





fwf - the one on mine the spring is strong enough to where you can%26#039;t use your hands to just put it in place even one for a used one, even worse for a new one, you can if your strong enough but you have to be pretty strong, also it would mess up your hand, they have to have a strong spring to be useful, the bearing in the pulley will wear out before the spring so if its so wore out where you can easily move with your hands then the bearing will be bad also and just might as well replace the whole thing if its that easy, so you can%26#039;t just put it in place with your hands and it not hurt, trust me i%26#039;ve tried just to see if i could, im not weak but im not a big guy either and i couldn%26#039;t do it, i could get close but not enough, then i used a 1/2%26quot; drive ratchet wrench without a socket and no pipe just the ratchet and did it with ease because you have both a good handle and you use leverage lol|||The tensioner is spring loaded . You should be able to push/pull on it. If it doesn%26#039;t move at all, it needs to be replaced.

How do I change the serpentine belt on my 2003 Kia Sedona?

The manual has no info for me. I need to know how to and something with a diagram would be nice. From visual inspection there are two seperate belts close in area. Are there two serpentine belts or is one of them something else? They look the same just wrapped around different things. I%26#039;m not just a girl and I want to take care of my own vehicle but I am lost about this and I could use some info. I do not want to take my mini into some shop so they can charge me an arm and a leg for something I%26#039;m sure I can do. Kia and hyundai are the only manufacturers that give their service manuals free online.. after registering, you will have the same info as a dealer tech.. just go look for it under engines





those things use two seperate belts to run all the accessories (usually one is alternator and power steering, the other is for the a/c) and will require both to be replaced|||Change them both. Just put a socket or adjustable under the automatic tensioner and they pop right out; do the opposite to put the new ones in. I thought those things had a 100,000 mile warranty. What, no service plan? shame on you; you didn%26#039;t trust Toyota.|||Go to your nearest Auto Zone or Napa etc they will give you a diagram and explain how to replace the serpentine belt. Trust me just went through that about 6 months ago. Not fun!!|||belts usually not covered by a service plan, but I could be wrong.





I would start off talking to a mechanic, Just talking, explaining your problem (take the car with you) let them know you want to do it yourself. If no one will talk with you, (not at you) then find someone that will. there are a lot of honest mechanics around. Get some pointers, If you came to my shop I would just help you, proud of you for wanting to do it yourself, (good customer relations) My older daughters learn at there own speed, and I help them when needed. I need to change out the water pump, it is leaking, thought the belt may need to be changed at this time too. It has been wet.|||Breaker bar and socket are all the tools you need. Find the tensioner and twist it like the other guys say. But, one of the great improvements of the serpintene belt over the old belts is that they rarely need to be changed in the life of the car. If it is damaged or glazed in some way then change it. Other than that, just put the old one back on.|||If you are going to do it yourself, just ask the parts guy how to at the counter, maybe he will offer to come change it for you.|||should do all that stuff at the same time sense it all apart i take it to the dealer they have tools for that kind of work.|||A pry bar or long handled appropriate socket to release the tensioner(gently) and the appropriate wrenches for the water pump and some body fairly stout ought to do the trick...|||Under the hood of the car there will be a belt routing diagram. On that diagram it will tell you which pulley is the automatic tensioner. Sometimes the tensioner is hard to reach and a serpentine belt tool is needed but if the tensioner can be reached it usually needs to be rotated counter clockwise to relieve pressure on the belt. Once the pressure is relieved slip the belt off. Follow the belt routing diagram to install the new belt on the correct pulleys. Rotate the tensioner counter clockwise and slip the belt onto the last pulley. Before the engine is started make sure the belt is sitting flush on all of the pulleys or you will damage the new belt.|||I belive it is a 15mm on the tensioner once you have the belt depending on which motor it has you may have to take off the upper motor mount you will see after the belt is off if you have to or not other than sliding it over the smooth idler last it is fairly simple|||The main problem that needs to be addressed is the water pump. If you replace the belt but don%26#039;t fix the water pump, the belt will be toast soon after. The other thing is that most repair shops include a new belt with the price of replacing a water pump.

Some cars have square holes to put a breaker bar on, some just have flats to put a wrench on. Either way, draw a diagram of the belt routing and keep it in the car, just in case it breaks sometime. The rule is the smooth pulleys ride on the back of the belt, the grooved pulleys the front, or inside of the belt. You can do it..Geo|||You should be able to tell which pulley will move and remove tension just by looking at it. I know I had a Honda where I had to loosen the alternator because it actually put tension on the belt. Your best option if you don%26#039;t know much about this particular car is to invest in a a good repair manual for it. Honda%26#039;s and Toyota%26#039;s often have illogical repair steps.

how long should the Serpentine Belt last in a car?? I have a Chrysler LHS 94 and i was told it is time to change it? should i ASAP or are they just getting $$$ from a female.. it is cracked on the inside i have seen it|||biggest scam going. Take it from me, I walked off the service floor seven years ago and became an auto teacher because of these things. Serpentines can last up to ten years an an average car. When looking at the belt on the ribbed side, you need to replace it when there are two sections of ribbing missing within two inches from each other. If there is a small(1/2) piece missing from 1 rib, the belt is fine. The out(smooth)side of the belt will show signs of being worn out by turning a gray colour and threads are coming out around the edges. A multitude of tiny cracks on the inside is very normal because these belts are manufactured in a continuous strip, then they are cut to size and the ends bonded together. When you take something that was flat and curve it, say around a half dozen round pulleys of an engine, the inner circumference of the belt is smaller than the outer, causing the ribs to slightly fold over each other. After awhile, the ribs are folded and unfolded so often that they crack. I think physics has an explanation for this phenomena of rubber cracking like it does, as conservation of energy. If the belt is stretched, there is a wear indicator on every tensioner pulley. The movable arm piece of the pulley has a pointer that lies between two marks on the non movable part. As long as the pointer is between the two, the belt is fine.|||When it get%26#039;s cracked like that it is a good idea to change it but you can do it yourself. There is a diagram, usually located on your fan shroud. All you need is a 3/8 in ratchet or a 15 millimeter wrench depending on what your tension wheel front center looks like. I%26#039;ve even had them where they were 9/16. A little help from someone is nice. But you can do it yourself. Some people don%26#039;t change them till they break.|||If it is cracked, also called dry rot, then yes it is time to change it! They are very low cost and sometimes can be done on your own, but sounds like you may not have the know how(no offense!) and its better to replace it now than later when you are stranded on the side of the road after it shreds to pieces and causes more damage! So i say buy the part and pay the mechanics labor only, most shops mark up parts and make their money there. Most mechanics work per the job not by the hour, so your looking at a 30 minute-1 1/2 hour job at the most, and most labor rates are anywhere from $40.00-$75.00 dollars per hour on the job.


Good luck!|||Cracks are not good, and I%26#039;ve also seen them run a long time with the cracks (dry rot). I will always change my belt at about 65 to75,000 mile mark. Just about all that I%26#039;ve seen have cracks due to the overwhelming heat they are exposed to, most of the people I tell just keep driving it. They will drive it till it brakes and now they have no water pump, power steering, alternator, or air conditioning, and on top of all this they are now calling a tow truck for a $65.00 job that could have saved them. I recommend like I said to change it every 65 to 75,000 mile whether it needed it or not. It will save you in the long run, plus the Little bitty hassle of WORRY|||if any part of the belt is missing id change it asap but if its cracked its ur choise who knows how long it will last could last 1 hr or 5 years if u dont drive out of town much it may b ok 4 now but if u plan on a trip id change it to be safe hope this helps good luck

How much would it cost to change a serpentine belt on a 1994 GMC Vandura?

When I start the van and let it warm up there is like a screeching sound and then when I drive it it normally takes a long time to switch into first gear and to get going..could this be the serpentine belt?|||Serp belt has nothing to do with trans shifting while screeching noise could come from it.


With noise, start with checking the belt tensioner arm - it should return without binding after being swung by hand (make sure the engine is not running when testing this!).


This is an extremely common gm (not only gm) problem - the tensioner arm gets corroded, and doesn%26#039;t provide sufficient belt tightening.


Trans - sounds like you have leaking internal seal(s), and only overhaul or replacement will take care of that. But first check fluid level!|||The screeching during start up could be a belt but I doubt it. Serpentine belts are good for a long time, plus have self adjusters. Look at the belt, if the ribs on the bottom are cracked and split, replace it. It is easy and any car guy friend should be able to do it. I%26#039;m more concerned you have a transmission problem. Have you checked the fluid? Let us know some details..|||Screeching could be caused by the belt of one of the bearings it is driving on. Kind of sounds like your trans is slipping or low on fluid. Get some diagnosis done on it.|||before overhauling transmition check fluid if bron and smells burnt change fluid and filter first this sometimes takes care of this cause filter gets plugged

Thanks!|||First go and buy a repair manual at a parts house, and see what it takes to do this. Can just look at it and see if you can do this. Also can go to the library and check out the book as well, thats alote less expensive. Some of these take special tools and might not be your cup of Tea.|||First take a paper and draw up a rough scetch of how the belt is routed. you need either a 1/2 inch breaker bar, or 1/2 wratchet.


you will see the square hole on the idler pulley. If it wont move pull and push untill it will. using the wratchet I recommend a pipe or cheater pipe on it for more leavarage. You can just stack some blocks of wood under the oil pan, then lift the front end of the car a little bit by hand, and slip in one last piece of wood to support the motor slightly. How to make enough room to change serpentine belt?

I have a 05 corolla, I know how to change the serpentine belt but have no idea what or how to make room or get my hands down in the engine compartment to take off the belt and replace it. There%26#039;s a bunch of stuff in my way. How do mechanics do it? What should I remove that will let me get a better access to tackle this project?|||I am afraid you do not really know how to replace serpentine belt on your car according to your statement.





Nothing or only thing you need to remove is the engine top cover. That is for more room to reach the belt.





It is a rather simple work, about ten minutes work if you do not need to replace the tensioner. I suppose your car is rather new and the tensioner should be in good working condition.





Better draw a picture how the belt goes over each wheel since I guess you do not do this from time to time. Or you can bear in mind how it goes.





Stand in front of your car, use a 19 mm long box wrench or a 19mm socket and a long rachet to hold the nut shape point on the tensioner (Use a light and observe carefully. You should notice that this nut is not really a nut; it is a nut shape part of the whole metal piece of the tensioner. Further to the back is the real nut that holds the tensioner to the engine body.), pull it backwards or towards you. The tensioner will go downwards and thus releasing the belt; at this time, use your left hand remover the belt off the flywheel near the alternator. Then you can pull it out easily.





Remember, observe carefully how the belt goes before remove it.





Installation is the reverse of removing.

Have you tryed to jack the car up put it on stands? you might have a better chance of coming up from the bottom to install the belt. I had a Camry Clone and you had better luck jacking the car up removing the tire and aaccesss panel inside the wheel well to change the belt.|||As a mechanic for many years. I have a special tool that has a long handle. It grabs the belt then has a release on it. this gives me the extra length I need to get the belt around the pulleys. I have used a coat hanger connected to a broom handle that I have cut. If you get creative you could make something similar to create the same effect. Good luck!! I know how much of a pain they can be.|||I recently had a problem with my serpentine tensioner and couldn%26#039;t figure out how the mechanic would be able to fix it. He took the front tire off which exposed it. If you have a side mount motor, like my Saturn, it will probably help.

It hasn;t completely busted but is severely frayed and had been squealing for quite some time.|||fairly easy, release pressure on the tentioner with a breaker bar, pull the old belt off track, remove any hardware that gets in the way, re-route new belt, replace hardware, release tentioner with breaker bar and track the belt...





about 10 minutes|||its not that hard!, there should be a diagram on the radiator support, showing you which way it goes on.|||no big deal--check for the tag on the radiator core support for routing , have some patience and it can be done at home. tools are minmal. just patience.|||not hard at all look for a diagram that should be mounted somehwere under the hood mainly the radiator support and just remove the old one and reinstall the new one and then have some fun out of the old one haha|||Ok, first things first. Putting the belt on isn%26#039;t a hard task but ask yourself why the belt broke. Usually (unless it was that dry rotted) is a reason. Usually a locked up pulley, alternator, power steering pump, tensioner, idler pulley etc.. see if you can spin them all by hand. The Crank you wouldn%26#039;t be able to by hand but that shouldn%26#039;t be a issue. Anyways if all goes well then you should have a diagram under the hood right in front of the radiator. You will have to have a socket for the belt tensioner to loosen but it%26#039;s not hard. Good Luck!

Ok what the trick to change the serpentine belt on my 1999 chevy malibu.10 PTS HURRY|||Use a serpentine tool and pull the tensioner to the side, this allows the belt to come off. sometimes a wrench or a ratchet works too but takes more effort.... put the belt back on according to the diagram located under the hood.. its easier to go around every thing but the alternator. pull the belt close to the alt and use the serp tool to give enough slack to slide it over the alternator.. you will find this is pretty simple, little hands work too lol|||put a ratchet on the tensioner to release tension. Then take the old belt off the alternator, then, paying very close attention to how it%26#039;s routed remove it the rest of the way. then put the new one on the same way, then put the ratchet back on the tensioner and finally back on the alternator. If you forget how it routes there should be a sticker somewhere that shows you how it goes. If there is a motor mount in the way you must be routing it wrong. look for the sticker.

Why would a 1998 dodge laramie slt get hot after changing the serpentine belt?

i changed the serpentine belt on my truck after it broke. it was running when it broke. changed the belt and its on right but now its getting hot. never got hot before. please help|||the belt is on wrong, and running the waterpump backwards.....|||is it possible you have the belt routed wrong on it because sometimes you can run them the wrong way,that or a bad thermostat would be the two most likely causes for sudden hotter temperatures,good luck.

Changing serpentine belt on 96 chevy beretta?

ok so we have a 1996 chevy beretta, (v-6 3.1L) and the serpentine belt has shredded away, still there some what but needs replacing, anyone have tips\suggestions on changing them the easiest or better way? or should i take it to a garage?


thanks|||The easiest way to do it is to follow the pattern of the old belt if possible most cars have a diagram of the belt pattern the easiest way I have found is to put it on all of the pullies except the alternator and then loosen the tensioner and put the belt on the alternator but make sure it is under the tensioner like it is supposed to be good luck
