What is this whistling sound coming from under the hood?

Hello, I have a 1999 Camaro, and when I start it up in the morning, there seems to be this sound coming from under the hood. It sounds like someone wheeling a wheel barrel around, that kind of screeching/whistling sound.

It cant be the belt, because i just changed the serpentine belt. After I drive around for like 5 minutes it goes away. If i start the car the same day, it doesn't happen again.
What is this whistling sound coming from under the hood?
Does this car have A/C? The reason I ask is because my son had the same issue with his 97 Cutlass. Turned out to be the a/c clutch. The compressor was old and we didn't really use the a/c in NY so it rusted and expanded so the clutch was touching the plate..hence the noise. Your problem (if I understand the noise description) must be along these lines. Check pulleys and your belt tensioner too. Hope this helps
What is this whistling sound coming from under the hood?
I had the same thing happen on '97 Malibu/GM. Replaced the belt that wore out. Then the sound started in a few weeks. It turned out to be the water pump. Supposed to be a simple repair but took me all day. I got the pump for $32 at O'Riley's..at least saved some money.

It seems that when a belt is replaced, it can put extra stress on the water pump.

1994 Plymouth voyager repair serpentine belt?

anyone know how to put the serpintine belt back on, by boyfriend took it off to change the altenator and now it isnt on there right. dad says a diagram would help if anyone has one
1994 Plymouth voyager repair serpentine belt?
yes look at the belt one side is smooth and the one side is riped with lines start with the center hub in the engine then follow the smooth pulleys with the smooth side of the belt and it will be self explanatory .....look around in the engine you should see one (diagram)

Change a car belt?

i have a 1990 dodge dynasty and the serpeantine belt whatever its called is almost ripped and coming off and the motor waste a lot of gas and i mean a lot is it from the belt not being on good? And is it easy to change a serpentine belt?
Change a car belt?
Bullcrap. I just changed the serpentine belt on my S-10 pickup an hour ago and it took all of ten minutes, most of it spent collecting a tool to do the job. The only thing required was a 16mm box wrench to release the tension on the spring loaded idler. If you get confused as to where the belt goes on the pulleys, there is a chart on a tag over the radiator shield that shows how to place the belt on the pulleys.
Change a car belt?
Your best bet is to have someone do it as you may need a tensioner as well. Putting the belt on properly is critical and best left to the pros.
Um the dynasty isn't to hard to change, if you have the basic tools. As for gas consumption this could be lots of things, the belt could certainly be a contributor by causing valve openings and closings at the wrong times. It could also could cause the engine to labor to generate power.
you can find a diagram of your car and change the belt yoru self and they are only about $30. The gas maybe a time for new plugs and clean the jets
There should be a schematic for the routing of the belt on a placard in the engine compartment. The hardest part is getting your hands down between the motor and fender to thread the belt around all the pulleys. It takes a longer handled wrench than the normal length to get to the tensioner.

As far as the gas usage is concerned, the belt has no fault. You have some other problem there.
IMO, I say try to change it yourself I hate to see people pay someone to do a easy belt change and get charged dubble what it would to do yourself.

Car talk:scrapping noise after belt change?

i took the car to the shop for just a regular oil change+ rotation, dude walks up, sounding grave (note the place was empty...u know, bad economy), said my belts were bad and needed to be changed.. i got serpentine...(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serpentine_鈥?/a> so they did change, right... so i drive off, get on free way and lo and bhold, at %26gt;60mps my freaking steering starts vibrating.. i got new tires %26lt;4months, and they got balancing already... then after i stopped, car becomes cold, starting off or making bends i got this loud screeching shrill noise from car. any ideas what they did wrong that could have caused it?
Car talk:scrapping noise after belt change?
Bad idler pulley for serpentine belt. Tires need to be re-balanced.

Car talk:scrapping noise after belt change?
that definitely sounds like your power steering pump is acting up. Changing the belt shouldn't have anything to do with it unless it is too loose. Try going out to your car, start the car and leave it in park now turn your wheel all the way to the lock. If you hear a screeching noise then that's what it is. Now you may just need to bleed to system which is done by turning the wheel from lock to lock to lock to lock and so on until the screeching stops. If it doesn't, go back to that shop.

How to change the drive belts on a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder 3.5LV6 DOHC?

Not quite sure where to release the tension to slip off the belts? I have changed serpentine belts before; however, never on this vehicle.
How to change the drive belts on a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder 3.5LV6 DOHC?
alright look at the A/C or Altenator, there should be 2 or 3 screws loosen them up (usually) and that will loosen the belts for you, for more info, send me an email with as much detail as possible.

  • 1997 & 2000 Ford Explorer has a funny sound from under the front end, not the engine compartment. What is it?

MY son has a 2000 Ford Explorer %26amp; I have a 1997 Ford Explorer (altho mine if 11 years old, only has 80,000 miles) I noticed his car made a funny sound, like wub-wub-wub coming out from under his car and he said it is probably a tire of balancing, or alignment. Well I just bought a 1997 Ford Explorer and low and behold, I have the same funny sound - wub-wub-wub. I took it in for a complete check-up, oil change, serpentine belt, radiator flush, and 4 NEW COOPER TIRES, complete with balancing. I told the garage that the sound was there and he said he could find nothing to pin it on altho I don't think it is as pronounced and before. What could be causing this sound. I drive with my ears as well as my eyes, nose, taste, and feel. Could this sound be caused by that protective cover just beside the wheel - it seems to be a cover to keep mud and debris from getting at the other components of the undercarraige. PULLLeeeezzze - Somebody tell me what is causing the wub-wub-wub sound. Thanks

It might be a piece of plastic flapping or something. It is probably wind noise. An explorer has the aerodynamic properties of a fridge.

    Serpentine belt and Drive Belt?

I got my oil changed today at the Nissan dealership. They told me that my drive belts need to be replaced (they have cracks in them).

My last oil change (before this one) was at car spa, on the check sheet, it said my serpentine belt was OK. This was back in December 2009.

I find it odd that after only about 4 months the belts now have cracks in them and need to be replaced immediately.

This is of course serpentine belt and drive belts are two different things. So are they the same thing? What is the difference?

    I drive a 05 Nissan Sentra.
    Serpentine belt and Drive Belt?
serpentine belt runs all your accessories like power steering, alternator, water pump and air conditioner, the drive belt is the timing belt and that cannot be seen from outside the engine and there is no way physically possible for a mechanic to see that belt to say it needs replaced without tearing the front of the engine apart, apparently he is going by the mileage on your vehicle and the factory recommended change interval.
    Serpentine belt and Drive Belt?
On a 4 cylinder engine there is usually only 1 serpentine belt and it's the drive belt (might be different on a sentra). If you live in a place with variable temperature it's likely that a belt would need to be replaced after 5 years. Actually in this case I would trust the dealership more than an independent provider.
Whoever called them drive belts, do not go back to them. They have drive belts on some motorcycles but there isn't any car that I know of that has a drive belt. If you have a serpentine belt, it runs everything but the cam shaft.

One more thing. An oil change at a dealership. When you went in for that they knew you didn't know much about cars and that's why they said you need a belt. Never go to the dealership for an oil change, you'll get charged twice as much and they'll try to get you for something else.
Most cars have 1 belt but some have 2. Some have 1 that goes from crank pulling to the water pump. And another one that drives all the accessories.
Take a few close-up picture of the belt and post another question. If you see cracks, take pictures of those specifically.

Then you'll get a yahoo answer on if the dealership was trying to do unnecessary maintenance.

For the question you asked here, I I think they mean the same thing in Serpentine and Drive belt.
not all cars have serpentine belts. But given the year I would say yes on serpentine! A serpentine belt Is one belt that runs A/C, Crank, Water pump, Alternator,And on most cars the power steering if the car has more than one belt then you have drive belts and some cars are driven by chain on the power steering that is why some of them are NOT on the serp belt! Hope this helps

1998 Jeep Cherokee Help!!! Serpentine Belt?

I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee and i just changed out the water pump on it...Everything is golden except i can not get the serpentine belt back on to save my life....i cant find a tensioner so im not sure what to do...anyone help..
1998 Jeep Cherokee Help!!! Serpentine Belt?
There is a tensioner located on the power steering pump, and I think it takes a 5/8%26quot; socket.

The easiest way to change it is use a long extension and a battery drill, you can have it swapped out in under 5 min.
1998 Jeep Cherokee Help!!! Serpentine Belt?
Okay try to get a rachet that is just a little bit bigger that the bolt that should work if not then you will have to take it to a machanic.
you should have a belt diagram sticker under your hood to show you the proper installation, if not, call the jeep people and they should be able to tell you, good luck, look for the sticker around the top cover of the radiator it could be located there also.
THe tensioner is under the powersteering pump, you loosen the bolt in the middle of the pulley and then loosen the 14mm bolt to the left of that until the belt goes back on.
ive got the service manual outside in my jeep. how did you relieve the tension to get the old belt off ???? what engine you got, 4.0 6 or the 8cyl.???
Some might have a mechanical tensioner. if not you need to get the right tools to pull the automatic tensioner back far enough.
    power steering pump tensions it
how did you get it off?

I'm going to change my serpentine belts on my car...?

Should I do this when the old belts are warm, cold or does it not matter? (2003 Dodge Intrepid)
I'm going to change my serpentine belts on my car...?
It doesn't matter, but a hot engine may burn your hands. Above all, make a diagram yourself (no matter how long it takes) of the way the belt is threaded around the tensioner and pulleys. You'll be sorry if you don't. Some engines require you to get under the crankshaft pulley to thread the new belt into place. Then you'll need to raise the front of the car using Rhino ramps and safety jack stands, so you might want to have a repair shop change the belt if you need to drive the car every day.

    Here's how.

How hard is it to change disc brakes on 98 ford ranger?

I have recently changed the serpentine belt and found that pretty easy, should I attempt brakes, or should I leave it to a shop?
How hard is it to change disc brakes on 98 ford ranger?
If you have slight to moderate skills, and some fairly basic tools, by all means, brakes are one of the easiest things in the world to do yourself. People are trained with all the Meineke and Brake Depot commercials that you need to have the pros do it for $100 per axle, not including rotors.

And of course, a mechanic will tell you to have the pros do it...job security.

    Don't fall for it.

You'll need (other than obvious tools) a bigger C-clamp, a socket set, maybe a crowbar, a screwdriver wouldn't hurt, to pry pads out if necessary. Maybe a hex set or allen wrench set, depending.

Each axle, assuming nothing is seized on too badly, should take the average backyard do-it-yourselfer about an hour or less. Wheel off, unbolt caliper from rotor. Might take socket, might take hex or torx wrench. Pads snap right out (and back in) caliper pretty easily. Use a C-clamp if you have one to push the caliper's piston back, so the new pads will fit around the rotor.

By the way, most rotors are manufactured so they CAN'T be turned, so you may need new ones. Usually $30-60 each. Sometimes less than $20. Reverse procedure to re-install.

I wouldn't attempt your drum brakes (if you have any). You'll probably wish you wouldn't have.
How hard is it to change disc brakes on 98 ford ranger?
Depending on your mechanical skills, replacing brakes is fairly easy, but you really should leave it to the pro's as it takes specialized tools, and a complete inspection of your braking system is also done at this time. Safety is priority.
They are quite easy. Could be done in less than a half hour, with the right tools. But take your time, and you'll do great.
It's pretty easy. Just take the wheel off, and the brake caliper is held on with a few bolts. Once it is off (carefully handle it so you don't pull on the brake line too much - I usually attach it to the spring or something with a zip tie while I'm working on it.

Take the old pads out, and inspect them - compare them on both sides of the truck to see if one side is wearing more than the other (sometimes a sign of brake problems).

Also check your rotors to see if they are damaged. If the pads wore to the point where they were metal on metal, then you probably want to take them to a shop and have them turned (usually pretty cheap). If they don't have enough hardface left on them you will need to replace them (check junkyards - find out how thick the rotor is supposed to be, and measure to make sure it isn't worn out - it doesn't really matter what they look like since you can just have them turned).

If everything looks good, then take off the master cylinder cap, and push the brake cylinder on the caliper back in (go slowly otherwise brake fluid will spurt out of your master cylinder and make a mess - if you have topped off your fluid, you might need to get some of it out with a bulb syringe or something). You should be able to push the brake cylinder in by hand unless it has problems - some are harder to get on than others, I sometimes use a large c-clamp to get them started, but don't force them too much or you can damage them.

Once the cylinder is pushed back in, you should be able to install the new pads, and then reinstall the caliper. If it won't fit over the rotor, then push the brake cylinder back in more until it will fit. Make sure to put the pads in correctly - take a picture, or make a little sketch of how things are before you start taking it apart - it's amazing how much that helps (or get a manual - that never hurts either).

Make sure your master cylinder has the proper amount of fluid in it, and put the cap back on. Always test your brakes out somewhere safe a few times before putting it back on the road (it's amazing how many people forget the important step of making sure that their brakes work before jumping back into traffic).

They might squeak a little bit at first as the pads get seated (having the rotors turned gives them a smoother surface which will help brake pad wear, but a little bit of uneveness isn't that bad once they get seated.
Disc brakes are much easier than the serpentine belt. Only leave it to a shop if you have more money than time, hopefully you have a service manual for your car (Motors, Chilton's, etc), some cars can be done in 15 minutes per wheel, some may take longer if you have to take the caliper off. Even drum brakes aren't that hard, just lay everything out in the order you took it off and watch out for that lethal spring.
Main thing is you need one, somewhat specialized tool. A C-clamp that opens like 6 inches. That presses the caliper back in the housing.

Secondly, you should have bought a Toyota. Everything is easier on a Toyota.

Thank God Ford doesn't make airplanes.
EASY IF YOUR A MECHANIC !
It is a fairly simple process, but if you do something wrong it could be dangerous since your brakes may fail to work.

  • How do I change the thermal flasher for my turn signal in my '91 Chevy Lumina?

I refuse to take it in. People here gouge you like crazy, and I've heard changing the flasher is one of the easiest things you can do. I've changed my own serpentine belt and I regularly change the oil in my car, I think I can handle this. I bought the part, now I just need to know where the stupid thing is located so I can replace it.
How do I change the thermal flasher for my turn signal in my '91 Chevy Lumina?
Simple find the flasher assymbly. It is usually under the drivers side of the dash. Usually by the fuse panel. Typically it is a silver metal cylinder with 2 prongs or a yello plastic cylinder with two prongs. unplug it and match it with the replacement flasher then plug it in.

It works very simple when voltage is put to the flasher the thin inside metal thermal connects the circuit .when the thermal strip gets hot it bends breaking the conection. When it cools. likly quickly in .2 to .9 seconds in most flashers .The thermal metal strip bends back closing the loop and flashing the turn light again .

Flashers go out fairly often depending on how much they are used .Remember though that also the turn signal lamps can go burn out. So if you replace the flasher and there is still a problem then look at the flasher lights themselves front and rear for each side. If they are fine and there is still a problem then look at the signal switch itself on the steering column.
How do I change the thermal flasher for my turn signal in my '91 Chevy Lumina?
Go get yourself a repair manual for your car if you plan to do more work on your car by yourself. It's a real time saver. I got 1 for each of my 5 cars. The manual should be around 20 bucks.
Its on left side behind emergency brake pedal. Good luck very easy fix for do it yourself person.

How much does it cost to change the spring tensioner on 96 plymouth voyager mini-van?

I have to change my serpentine belt every 8 months, the mechanic says the spring tensioner has to be changed what should this cost?
How much does it cost to change the spring tensioner on 96 plymouth voyager mini-van?
the tensioner costs 69.50 and normally .6 hours labor to replace. It is quite common for them to freeze and not hold tension on the belt. if your belts are fraying, splitting, getting cut, or are thrown off you have a pulley alignment problem. the tensioner is most likely bad, but all other pullies and the alignment needs to be checked too. that belt should last at least 60,000 miles.
How much does it cost to change the spring tensioner on 96 plymouth voyager mini-van?
first of all, what is the reason the belt needs to replaced every 8 months, does it break? wear out? fray off the sides/ and then why did he say the belt tensioner was defective? what did he say the reason was? unless the bearing is bad in it or the %26quot;tension%26quot; has gone out of the spring, which could actually be it is binding within the unit. either of those 2 reasons would be reasons to replace it. and taking care of that at a garage, could run up to another 150.00 over what ever it cost u to replace your belt. don't know for sure without more information. i hope this helps GOOD LUCK
    What engine?

3.3 and 3.8L have this exact problem when the tensioner is putting too much pressure on the belt. Just went through a rash of these last year!

3.0L- Could be the same, just haven't seen hat exact problem on one.

Tensioner is about 90-100 retail and .6 is crap for changing one. it is more like 1.2 hours as the nust on the back of the bolt requires having a second person under the vehicle or real skill doing the job. I go either way based on how the day is going.

ASE Cert Auto Tech, 96 T%26amp;C 3.8L, Mine was one of the rash of occurances.

How much will it cost to replace brakes, ball joint, wheel bolts and belt for a 99 VW beatle?

I need to get my rear brakes/rotors, one ball joint, two rear wheel bolts, and my serpentine belt replaced. I also need an oil change. How much should all this cost to fix including labor? Thanks!
How much will it cost to replace brakes, ball joint, wheel bolts and belt for a 99 VW beatle?
it will most likely run about 600.00 to 800.00 dollars. you can also go into a shop and get a written estimate. and that is at no charge. make sure it includes the price of parts and book time labor.. book time labor is the recommended time to make repairs to your car. the ball joint is about an hour, the belt is about an hour, half hour for each wheel stud, and about 2.5 hours for your rear brakes depending on the e-brake shoes. good luck!!
How much will it cost to replace brakes, ball joint, wheel bolts and belt for a 99 VW beatle?
Parts, you're looking at about 300$ from autozone, expect about 350$ from an independent shop, 450$ from the dealer. I'd estimate about 5 hours of labor by the book, at 65$ an hour which is what most independent shops charge, you're looking at about 325$ in labor. The dealer may charge as much as 100$ an hour, sometimes more.
around 300 usd should be fair
What the heck happened to your car?

Rear brakes+ rotors (oem replacement around 150); ball joint at least 100, wheel bolts? Under 20. Serp belt about 30-40. But the installation is going to kill you 4 hours by book? About that...

At least 500 altogether at an indy shop.

    Harmonic balancer/serpentine belt problem?

About a week ago, I started hearing a rattling sound when I turned on my air conditioner. I took it to the shop to get the oil and fluids changed and asked them to look at it. They said my car was fine, but needed it's 70000 mile check up. Three days later, my electrical problems light came on and my ac died. About an hour later the car stopped running in the middle of nowhere. I managed to get back home, but my car is still in the town where I broke down and the mechanic is saying that my harmonic balancer and serpentine belt are missing. What is a harmonic balancer? Is it likely that it would just fall off? How much should it cost to get it replaced? I have no idea if I can trust this mechanic and no way to get a second opinion without paying for a four hour tow to a shop closer to home. Please give me some advice on how to handle this....
    Harmonic balancer/serpentine belt problem?
I'm not sure what type of vehicle you are refurring to. On all vehicles though, the harmonic balancer is the crank shaft pully. This turns the drive belt(s) On most vehicles they will come apart and lose the belt. What causes this on most vehicles, the harmonic balancer has a rubber dampener made into it. The rubber will get worn and break apart then the pully comes off along with the belt. They will cause a rattling sound before it comes off also. It will cause you to loose power steering, A/C, sometimes water pump, depending on vehicle, and alternator wont charge.
    Harmonic balancer/serpentine belt problem?
The harmonic balance is connected to the end of the crank shaft and is used to tranmit the power to the rest of your accessories through the serpentine belt.

Harmonic balances don't typically just fall off, and though it is possible as some of them have a rubber connection that fails, you definitely would have heard something if it had truly fallen off, not to mention probably have a hole or very bad dent some where in your car.

Odds are the serpentine belt was lose, maybe the tensioner is bad and the serpentine belt fell off. You'll need the serpentine belt to drive the accessories. It's possible that one of the accessories (ie, A/C compressor Siezed and caused the belt to come off)

How much is he charging? Obviously the first thing to try is to simply replace the serpentine belt and see if it works.

If replacing the belt appears to work, I would drive it home that way, but minimize my use of all the accessories. (ie don't use the A/C, minimize use of electrical items) until I determined why the belt fell off initially.

How do I get the tentioner back in place after changing my water pump?

I have a 91 saturn 5 speed. I changed the water pump but now I can't get the tentioner thing to go back in place in order to turn the serpentine belt. Is there a secret to this? Any input will be greatly apprieciated.
How do I get the tentioner back in place after changing my water pump?
I hope you replaced the belt and the tensioner also.

At that age, they probably should have been changed long ago. If the belt breaks, it could ruin the engine (depends on engine type).
How do I get the tentioner back in place after changing my water pump?
there is a nubb on the back of the tensioner that fits into a hole on your engine that lines it right up. good luck
Its a spring loaded tensioner if you turned it to take the belt off and it didn't spring back the other way its bad.

  • Cost to replace serpentine belt? 99 Escort ZX2 Henderson, NV?

I have a 99 Escort ZX2. I took it to Midas to get the an oil change and coolant flush, and they told me it needed a new serpentine belt. They originally quoted me $105, but I didn't have the money at the time so I came back a couple weeks later. Well, the second time I went, they told me I was 'undercharged' for the belt and they tried to charge me $145 (total). The guy was on the phone talking to a guy from Autozone about getting the belt. When I checked the bill, I was being charged $56 for labor, and $70 for the belt. After doing some research, this repair takes 20 minutes max and the price of the belt on autozone.com was $21.99! I understand they upcharged the parts, but $150 an hour labor and tripling the price of parts in ridiculous.

Was I getting the shaft, or is this typical (or is it typical to get the shaft, lol)? Anyone else know a national chain that would give me better pricing, or a local place that won't screw me over in the Henderson, NV area?

Next time, spend 30 bucks on a 1/2%26quot; breaker-bar and $21.99 on the belt and change it on a sunny day. Labor I can see, but the markup on the part seems a little steep. They probably got it at Autozone

It seems every time I take my car in for an oil change or anything else they say that to me. I discovered recently when my son was a lube tech at Honda that a belt or any other work is considered an %26quot;upsell%26quot; and everyone from the lube tech to the mechanic gets a bonus.

Do you really even need it?

make a complaint to your local states atty general`s office file a fraud complaint. next time buy the belt and do the job your self, it can be done in 10 minutes and the cost including tools, should be under $40.00. they saw you comming, as stuck it to you but good. when you lift the hood, the replacement diagram and procedure is right on the radiator flange. when in doubt, dont be afraid to ask your friends and or relatives in the area, most would be only too glad to help, and a cold case of soda would be a lot cheaper than what you paid

We changed the alternator and had to loosen the belt (1).When we replaced everything and tightened the belt it became very loud. Like power steering pump squeak. Hard to tell where it is coming from. The squeak wasn't there before. Is belt too tight or too loose? (95 Jeep Cherokee SE 4.0)
LOUD squeak coming from serpentine belt?
Your belt may be loose, or you may have a bed bering in one of your pulley's. I would start by getting the belt tightened. If that does not work you can easily find out where the noise is coming from......

    1. Take a long screwdriver and CAREFULLY place it on everything that has a pulley. (Alternator, tensioner, etc.)

    2. Place your ear on the end of the screwdriver. The screwdriver will magnify any noise that is going on inside that may be causing the problem.

You can also buy belt compound that will %26quot;moisten%26quot; your belt. Some really old school guys use a bar of soap on the belt to lubricate it. I would not reccoment that though. Very dangerous.

    Hope you get it fixed....
LOUD squeak coming from serpentine belt?
Do that with a screwdriver and you could get it shoved in your head.

    Squealing belt = loose belt

    or

= pulley not turning for whatever reason
On v-belt in the past I touched a bar of soap to the edges and they stopped squealing. I would try tighitening the belt first.

How do you change the power steering belt on a l993 grand am with an overhead cam?

I all ready did the serpentine belt. I dont know how to get the steering belt off. What do you have to do to get it off? Its not like others I have done in the past. thanks for any help.
How do you change the power steering belt on a l993 grand am with an overhead cam?
Shoot i been a while since i have done one but if i remeber right you have to loosen the bolts on the pump to make it slide so you can take the belt off.

You don't change it with an overhead cam. You change it with a wrench.

04 Chrysler Town & Country - What does my serpentine belt squeak?

My serp belt was %26quot;chirping%26quot; sounded like a cricket living under the hood. I changed the belt, but the noise still occurred. I changed the Tensioner.. still the same.. I changed the Idler Pulley.. Results are the same.. Would a bad water pump or power steering pump pully cause this noise? I did not add any dressing to the belt.. I hear that is actually not recommended. Any thoughts?
04 Chrysler Town %26amp; Country - What does my serpentine belt squeak?
How many miles on the water pump?

Alternator is possible, P/S unlikely, A/C very possible

Take belt off and check them. looking for play or drag when spun by hand. Noise too, so turn down the radio in the garage.

Me I have a belt stethoscope to check where the noises come from. Real figgin handy and cheap from harbor frieght(way less than that tensioner you bought!)

04 Chrysler Town %26amp; Country - What does my serpentine belt squeak?
I replaced an alternator for this noise once and it fixed it. The customer was scared it was going to go out and he would have a dead battery. What reminded me of this was that when it came in the customer had replaced the belt prior thinking it was a belt noise.

  • Serpentine and Timing belts of 1998 Toyota corolla LE?

Following questions are regarding 1998 Toyota corolla LE model.

    1. Service center with Toyota dealer recommends me to change the serpentine belt and he quotes $135 for it. When I contacted another service center, they said that there were three kind of serpentine belts (one for air conditioning and others for something else) and questioned which one needs to be replaced. But, my toyota dealer says there is only one serpentine belt. Does anyone know how many serpentine belts found in 1998 Toyota corolla LE model? If more than one kind, any idea which one the toyota dealer refers to?

    2. Toyota dealer recommends me to change Timing belt and quotes $350 for it. When I contacted other service center, they said there was no timing belt in 1998 Toyota corolla LE, but it had Timing chain and it didn't have to be replaced in the lifetime of the car. Who is correct?

    Thanks.
Serpentine and Timing belts of 1998 Toyota corolla LE?
    1998 Toyota Corolla 1.8L 4-Cylinder Fuel Injection:

This car has a timing chain and a single serpentine belt. As mentioned there are two belts to choose from, standard or with AC.

I'm wondering if your vehicle information is right. For example, the 1994 Corolla LE does have a timing belt and a single serpentine belt. Otherwise the dealership is pulling your leg.
Serpentine and Timing belts of 1998 Toyota corolla LE?
i think the dealership would know better, they deal with them everyday. it does have a timing belt and 1 serp belt, on older models they had 3 belts, one for a/c one for power steering, and the other for alternator -water pump
Are you ready to go to work? If your car has air conditioning it uses a special V belt. If it has air a multi-ribbed belt is used.

The price of each: V belt $32.66 Multi-ribbed or as others call it: Serpentine belt $37.95. Both are Gates products and are available at: autopartswarehouse.com.

Save yourself a lot of money and invest in a serpentine belt removal tool for $22.00 and do this ultra-simple job yourself. The tool relieves the spring pressure on the belt tensioner.

Look carefully at the path of the belt and you will easily find it. It's a completely seperate idler pully whish does nothing more than keep the belt tight. Don't pay Toyota your hard earned money. If you can't swing it an independant mechanic will do it for you for half the price. I'd do it for the price of the belt.

Forget worrying about a timing belt. Your car does not have one. You have a timing chain.
Well this all depends on the month your vehicle was built. They do switch over during the middle of a year run. Smartest thing for you to do is actually open your hood and look. Look at the front of the engine, most likely passenger side, and look at the belt(s). Also look behind the belt(s) and if the is a plastic timing cover (most likely black) then it has a timing belt. Be thankful if you have a timing chain. If you have a timing belt and over 60k on your car and have no idea when it was last changed...... Change it soon.

I have a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager. How often does the timing belt need to be changed?

I just had the serpentine and the alternator drive belts changed, but is there a separate timing belt on my van? If so, how expensive if it to get it changed? I was quoted $450 or so, so they must have to take a lot of the engine apart.
I have a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager. How often does the timing belt need to be changed?
Chrysler's service manuals recommend 90,000 miles at the earliest. I would say 75K to 80K is appropriate.

Basically, we have to remove the belts, pulleys, motor mount, lay the PS Pump and AC Compressor aside and remove the bracket and remove the front covers. It is also a good idea to inspect or replace the water pump while in there.

$450 seems to be about average.

I'm assuming you have the 3.0L since you mention timing belt (3.3L and 3.8L have a timing chain, not a belt) and they are prone to oil leaks at the cam seals. It is a good time to do them as well, if they are leaking.
I have a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager. How often does the timing belt need to be changed?
should be replaced every 50,000 but most people go to 75;000

450 is about right they have to tear down the front of the engine
the timing belt needs to be replaced 75,000.quotes vary from 450.00 to as much 8 or 9.00 make the tech.gauranity price and labor. good luck
Look in your owners manual if you have one.

Mot vehicles recommend to replace it at every 75k to 100k miles, or 10 years, whichever is first. Chrysler manuals usually recommend having it done at 90k miles, with no mention of age. However, I would change it if it gets to 10 years old and has not reached the recommended miles yet just for safety sake.

50,000 miles is too early in most instances to replace the timing belt. At that rate, you'd have replaced it twice in the recommended replacement interval. I replaced mine at 100k miles (and about 6 years old) and it still looked great, which is how you want it, you don't want it all worn out and cracked when it's replaced.

$450 is about right for a timing belt on a voyager, only reason it should go higher is if they find something else needs to be replaced while they're in there. In that case, they should always ask before adding anything to the repair order.
About 75,000 miles is good on those engines. However, if your at that mileage, spend a little extra, and replace the water pump, and timing belt tensioner at the same time. The timing belt drives the water pump, and if you've got that sort of mileage on the van, the pump is reaching the end of it's service life. Much better to take care of it, since you'll be right there anyway. It will cost you less in the long run.

Squeaky Serpentine Belt on 2000 Ford Taurus or something else..??

every since I got my sepentine belt changed it has squeaked ! I took it back to Jiffy Lube, and they put some kind of belt dressing on. it worked for a while and stopped squeaking until I turned my car off and started it back up, now it is sqeaking louder !

they say it may be a pulley, or the alternator bearings going out...but if this was true would the noise stop sometimes, and come and go, or would it be non-stop ? I noticed that the noise goes at way sometimes at idle, but is always there at start up...sometimes it squeaks all day !

    what could it be..??
Squeaky Serpentine Belt on 2000 Ford Taurus or something else..??
sounds like to me that if you have the right serpentine belt on that your belt tensioner pulley could be giving out. don't buy the alternator bearing story. what i have done on occasion is to move the tensioner pulley back and forth for awhile to make sure it is moving freely. you could buy some %26quot;belt dressing%26quot; and spray it on the underside of the belt for a quick fix. if it keeps sqeeking you might need a new belt tensioner pulley.
Squeaky Serpentine Belt on 2000 Ford Taurus or something else..??
sounds like a loose alternator belt, have someone tighten it.
    water pump going-OUT.
It could be the belt dressing they put on causing the belt to slip. It could also be the cam synchronizer, water pump, idler pulley, tensioner pulley.
Second answer is a good answer - what you might also check is to turn on your defroster - then turn it off - and see if that makes any difference. if it does it could be your a/c compressor - The clutch plate could be wore and/or your compressor may be going out. The air conditioning system works in the winter time any time the defrost is used to keep the oil circulating in the system. hope this helps. good luck

PLEASE HELP!!! My car is squealing after I replaced my serpentine belt. Did my mechanic break something?

I went in for an oil change and the workers said I needed a new serpentine belt. They replaced it, but now my car is squealing. My car has never made this sound before! They said it was common and I needed a new tensioner (?). Did they break it or is this common to happen after getting the belt replaced? Thanks so much!!!
PLEASE HELP!!! My car is squealing after I replaced my serpentine belt. Did my mechanic break something?
They probably had an oil transfer from their oily hands to the belt. It's a common problem with dirty, sloppy mechanics. Take it back and tell them to clean all of the pulleys of oil and repalce the belt. It is not the tensioner and it is not common if the mechanic is relatively clean. They don't want to admit that they were sloppy but they'll sure sell you a tensioner to make more money from you. You may even be able to buy a spray cleaner specifically made for this type of problem.
PLEASE HELP!!! My car is squealing after I replaced my serpentine belt. Did my mechanic break something?
Probably just needs to be adjusted.
They broke somthin, squealing like that is really uncommon. (Some questions) Did it start squealing after the change, if so... Yea, they broke somthing, Most of the time they wont admit a mistake Consult another mechacian and tell him your problem
it may be because its cold. some cars have adjustable idler pulleys. you can try to adjust it a little to take up the slack.
Dan B is correct. Mechanics are notorious for trying to pull a fast one on the unsuspecting customer. They either broke something or put the wrong belt on. If it wasn't squealing until after they touched it, it's their fault.
maybe oil got in to the belt when they changed it..

buy a belt dressing, it sometimes helps.

get it at autozone or some local auto part store you got there

A dealer will cost you a lot more than an independent shop. Forget the term %26quot;major%26quot;. Each shop will include what they will do under that term. I got my multi V-Groove belt A/C & Alt changed today is that the serpentine belt?

a serpentine belt is a belt that goes around all of your pullies on your vehicle. If this belt does that then yes it is. A Serpentine belt is called just that because like a snake it wraps around everything.

I have a high pitched noise coming from the engine area of my 2003 Saturn L200. Can anyone give any ideas?

I suspect it is coming from the exhaust intake area on the backside of the motor. Already changed serpentine belt. The noise is not there unless you press on the gas. It does it in neutral as well as driving.
I have a high pitched noise coming from the engine area of my 2003 Saturn L200. Can anyone give any ideas?
I don't think it has anything to do with your exhaust unless it has developed an air leak that sounds like a high pitched squeal. It's not very likely that is the culprit. Noises like this can be very hard to pinpoint. BUT... High pitched noises are usually related to a bearing that has become dry from wear and is getting close to overheating. Many engine parts that must rotate to do their function have bearings. You may want to check the Alternator. They can commonly cause a high pitched noise when the bearing is going bad. Usually if you remove the belt after you have driven the car, you hear the noise and the engine is still hot you can spin the pulley with your fingers and you will be able to feel that it's not moving easily. If it feels gritty when you turn it and it makes any audible noise you have found your problem. Good luck.
I have a high pitched noise coming from the engine area of my 2003 Saturn L200. Can anyone give any ideas?
My idea is to take it to a shop that has a stethiscope to determine where it's coming from.

    Ml350 Serpentine belt?

Hello, does anyone know if it easy or have some instructions on how to change the ML 350 Serpentine belt?

    Thanks
    Ml350 Serpentine belt?
I would take it to a dealer, but I suppose I only say that because I am a tech and that is how we make money. If you insist on doing it yourself I would take a mental picture of how the belt is routed and then all you will need is a 3/8%26quot; drive ratchet and a 17mm socket to release the tensioner. The tensioner is on the right side of the crank pulley and the 17mm hex head is underneath the belt. It's really easy, but I have changed a million of them so I would say you shouldn't have to much trouble with it.
    Ml350 Serpentine belt?
Easy, as long as the diagram is still under your hood. There should be a sticker near the radiator showing the routing of the belt. You insert a ratchet wrench, usually 3/8%26quot; drive in a hole in the front of the tensioner pulley and relieve tension on the belt. Take off the old one and put on the new one. Release the wrench and the tensioner should resume it's job. That is, if this car is like all the others with a serpentine belt.

  • How much would a dealership charge to change a fan belt on a Jeep Grand Cherokee?

It's a 95, v8, serpentine belt. I did it myself in about 5 minutes. The cost of the belt was a little under $30 from Autozone. I wonder how much a dealership would charge for something that took me (moderately experienced) 5 minutes to change.

Do it Yourself....It is very simple.

Buy a premium quality belt spend the money there.

It will only take few minutes, there should be a diagram on the fan shroud right under hood near the hood latch.

You know the routine for standard routine maintenance items, a standard auto shop charges at least 2x what a part would cost your. Dealership charges at least 3x what the part would cost you to do it yourself. =)

In NY is around $100.00 and hour labor. I work in a dealership but I don't get $100.00 an hour I get about 1/3 of a hundred an hour.

Audi A4 2002 1.8 quattro turbo has timing belt or serpentine Belt ?? or both?

I went to audi for a review in my car and they sad that i have to change the timing belt. Than when i talked to another mecanic they say serpentine belt....so now i am not sure with one my car has. because both give diferent price for change.
Audi A4 2002 1.8 quattro turbo has timing belt or serpentine Belt ?? or both?
you have both I have a 98.5 A4 and be warned if your timing belt breaks it will cost about 3k to fix because of bent valves and so much damage occurs to this engine. Audi extended the warranty on this so I would go to an Audi dealer and find out about that and get it fixed ASAP. Its not an easy job however as they have to remove the front bumper.
Audi A4 2002 1.8 quattro turbo has timing belt or serpentine Belt ?? or both?
Both. you need to have the timing belt and timing belt tesioners/harwear changed every 60K miles or so. the serpintine belt can be replaced when you see wear on it. you must change the timing belt on these car it will cost you if you dont.
it has both one you can see with the hood up the other you have to do some disassembly to see the timing belt turns the cams the serpentine belt turns the accessories i.e. alternator, power steering pump

When I start my car there is a belt that screeches. Is this the timing belt or the serpentine belt?

I believe I have never changed either of these belts and my car has about 155,000 miles on it. Or is this something I should just take to a mechanic to check out. I'm asking this first, because I see a bunch of coupons in the newspaper, for the timing belt change. But my friend stated to get everything done(timing belt, serpentine belt, %26amp; water pump), while the mechanic is around that area anyways. But I don't have that much money to spend on fixing it.
When I start my car there is a belt that screeches. Is this the timing belt or the serpentine belt?
it's the serpentine belt ...if it were the timing belt it wouldn't start
When I start my car there is a belt that screeches. Is this the timing belt or the serpentine belt?
    Serpentine belt

If it were the timing belt your engine would not be in time and would not run at all.

You are on borrowed time with your timing belt. It should be changed. If you have an interference style engine, if the belt fails your valves will crash into your pistions. This can completely destroy your engine.

When replacing your timing belt, it is a good idea to have the serpentine belt and water pump replaced as these items are already being removed to access the timing belt. So it should not cost any more in labor.

Get some estimates from a few mechanics.
Well, you were due for a timing belt change(80,000). It does not screech (It snaps) then it is a motor job%26gt;couple thousand bucks%26lt; Just to save a couple of bucks - you will lose the car.%26gt;it becomes worthless%26lt;.

You pay alot for mechanic's time, so while he is in the same area as all the parts, do them all in one shot. Saves you coming back again. Don't buy groceries for a week. That should cover it. Get an estimate first. The mechanic knows how long it will take him and he will also know the cost of the parts and roughly how long it will take him to do the job.
It could be, or possibly fan / a/c belt?

I had a simlar problem on my car, especially in cold weather, after I got the belts replaced the screeching stopped.

If you're getting all of those replaced at the same time you're probably looking at $500+ for parts/labor.
pulley's screech and squeak not belts. $100 says its an idler pulley, start the car up with someone under the hood to locate the sound. Also touch the pulleys (with the engine off) and see if any are loose. You should also replace your belt just because 155k is a long time on a belt. Good Luck!
i think you should look at the serpentine belt for cracks or excessive wear if you see that then you should change your serpentine belt and the timing belt im not real sure about that, the water pump usually has a long working period and i wouldnt worry about it if there is no leaks.
its more likely to be the water pump/alternator belt give it a squirt of WD 40 and see if it cures the noise

2002 Hyundai Accent Timing & Serpentine Belt Replacement Costs?

I have a 2002 Hyundai Accent 2 door and need to get the timing belt and serpentine belts replaced. Does anyone know how much this might cost? I know timing belt changes start out at at least $320, but I'm curious to know the total cost plus the serpentine belt. Thanks.
2002 Hyundai Accent Timing %26amp; Serpentine Belt Replacement Costs?
You shouldn't have both. The 02 Accent should have a Timing Belt. But if I remember correctly, the water pump should be replaced at the same time.

I had a 00 Elantra. The Estimates I received ranged from $415 to $700. So shop around. Especially these days, don't just take the 1st estimate you receive, people will compete for your business. And it's a common enough part that you should be able to get an honest estimate.
2002 Hyundai Accent Timing %26amp; Serpentine Belt Replacement Costs?
Hmmm, timing and serpentine should be the same thing. Perhaps not, but on most cars it is. 3 to 4 hundred sounds about right, though. Question is, did it break while you were driving it? If you were, oh dear!
i would say about 400 to 450.00 with tax serpentine belt on the same side as timingcover that has to come off anyways to access and finish the ttimingbelt job, now timing belt tensioner's and water pump may be extra if needed. i worked in a shop as a service adviser for 8 years.

How do I change the belts on a 2002 Toyota Sienna V6?

I was expecting to find a single serpentine belt with an automatic tensioner pulley. I have changed serpentine belts on many models with no problem. But this Sienna has two belts, not one. One belt drives the power steering pump. The second belt drives the alternator and A/C. I don't see a tensioner pulley on either belt. Do these belts work like old-fashioned V-belts belts where you tension them by loosening something (like the alternator) and then using a pry bar to tighten the belt? I can barely see the power steering pump so it looks pretty tight, I welcome advice from anybody who knows this model. Thanks.
How do I change the belts on a 2002 Toyota Sienna V6?
loosen the 14mm bolt on top of alternator. loosen 12mm bolt below alternator sitting sideways. adjust belt tension with 10mm bolt running through previous 12mm.

loosen 12mm bolt on top of power steering pump. underneath vehicle loosen a 12mm bolt below p/s pump pull on belt to relieve tension, and pry carefully to increase tension.

a bit of advice when reinstalling belts, the belt tension has to be just so, too tight and you will wreck the bearings in both pump and alt., too loose and the belts will squeal they have to be just right.

  • Serpentine belt replaced and power steering fluid changed. Still grumbling.?

1998 Toyota Corolla. Power steering greatly improved. Grumbling noises went down; but did not stop. How long is power steering on this car good for, or what to look for before it completely goes out?
Serpentine belt replaced and power steering fluid changed. Still grumbling.?
The bearing on the pump may be bad. It could be the tensioner pulley.

Import/Toyota power steering pumps last a really long time. 10 years old is not out of the question.

Pumps can be had for $150.

    Tensioner for about the same.

Labor is only about an hour or two for either.
Serpentine belt replaced and power steering fluid changed. Still grumbling.?
It the will make that noise untill you get all the air out of the system. That is by turning the wheel to lock to the left or right, and the back to other lock. This mean as far the wheel will go. And hold the wheel there a few second. This will hap to be done about 5 times or more. Then check fluid, and top off. then do it again. It may take a few times to get all the air. If the noise does not stop the pump need to be replaced. And the same step used to get the air out.
How long is it good for? It's a Toyota! I had a 1990 Corolla ... drove it hard... Sold it in 2002.. no problems with power steering. If it ran low on oil due to a leak, then maybe some damage has been done. does the sterring feel fine.. does it jerk in ur hand?

    Serpentine belt squealing on Jeep?

The belt squeals real loud on my Jeep. I have already changed the belt and adjusted it several times. I have narrowed it down. When I turn off the A/C it stops squealing. At this point I assume it is the pulley. Can I buy the pulley at a parts store like Autozone and change it or do I have to replace the whole compressor?
    Serpentine belt squealing on Jeep?
You can change the pulley, it comes off as part of the clutch assembly. Autozone can lend you the tool to pull of the clutch.

If it still squeals after you change it you may need to change that compressor, if it's getting ready to seize up it would put more drag than normal on the belt causing it to squeal. In fact this is most likely your problem, but I'm with you, change the cheap and easy part first, you might get lucky.
    Serpentine belt squealing on Jeep?
spray some wd 40 on the belt while its making noise wear eye protection if noise quits shitty belt if noise remains replace compressor pully and bearing you might loose freon

How to take the serpentine belt off of a Buick?

I have taken them off other cars but can't seem to be able to find how the idler releases. This is a 1998 Buick Lesabre with a 3.8 V6. Also what's up with the bolt on the idler I can't get a metric or standard wrench to fit on it. What I am trying to do is change to altenator.

    Thank In Advance
How to take the serpentine belt off of a Buick?
15mm socket on a breaker bar or long ratchet placed on the idler pully bolt.
How to take the serpentine belt off of a Buick?
    im hot
if it is a spring loaded ideler, find the square hole in the aluminum arm and insert a 3/8 or 1/2 inch drive ratchet, which ever is required, then pull the tension awawy from the belt, don;t have to remove the tesioner.
i own a repair shop, and the process is just about the same as a Chevy except you get on the other bolt and pull to release the tension off of it,it basically works the same way though, you might have to loosen the one bolt but don't back it out more than one turn, but you should just be able to lift upwards on it,and release the tension on it,good luck with it ,i hope this helps.
Its the old imperial system that america's still using

caddilacs, buicks, chevys still use the ******* ancient measuring system.

Ford Mustang 2002 Squeaks after serpentine belt replacement?

I changed out the serpentine belt about a week ago on a 3.8 mustang 2002. Now I hear some kind of squeal that sounds like like metal friction and it causes a high pitch squeal. It sounds like the sound is coming from the head. The exact spot is, where the pulley connected to the head, the one right in the middle.. Thats where the sound seems to be from. So what is causing it? Is it common? After installing serpentine belt, does anything need to be adjusted? Thanks.
Ford Mustang 2002 Squeaks after serpentine belt replacement?
I'll bet 50 cents you used an aftermarket belt. I have found the aftermarket belts are more likely to squeak than a genuine Ford Motorcraft belt. Ensure the belt tensioner, idler pulleys and all accessories are good and all the pulleys are clean and free of any contamination. Verify it is a belt problem by pouring some water over the belt while it is squeaking to verify the condition. If it changes the sound, or temporarily makes it go away, look harder at the belt and all surfaces it touches.
Ford Mustang 2002 Squeaks after serpentine belt replacement?
try some belt dressing can be purchased at wal mart. It could be also that the new belt is putting quite a bit more tension on something. The belt tensioner itself maybe.
I know exactly what the issue is here - you need to replace your serpentine belt idler pulley - it's the one you had to take the tension off in order to put the belt on. Likely what has happened is that you put the belt on the proper way but rastling with the pulley may have dislodged some rust or dirt which caused the bearing to become gritty. most of these pulleys are plastic so dirt can wear them out pretty quickly. try taking the pulley off and see how the bearing feels - if it spins freely, it;s fine, otherwise replace it. The other thing you need to check is that the belt isn't sitting crooked on the system. make sure that the belt is running in it's proper grooves and that it is not sitting over the edge of one of the pulleys. hope this helps!
I have 3.8 Mustang that had this problem for a long time before I figured it out. Start with checking the idler pulley, however that was not my problem. it has a part called a cam angle sensor. It takes place of the distributor. it is located at the top front of the engine. Instead of a distributor cap it just has a small cap about the size of an old electric choke. It mounts and adjusts just like an old style distributor, with a shaft and gear. If you pull it out(just like removing a distributor) make sure you mark it first and reinstall it exactly like it came out. You can get a new one at an auto parts store, listed under remanufactured distributors. You will need a special alignment tool to install the new one. I got the tool online from OTC tool company.
i believe the tension on your belt is off a bit,the idle pulley if it is seized up will make a whistling noise and not a sqweaking noise

the belt of accesories or serpentine belt,is that a backyard mechanic job or does it has to be taken to the dealer? thanks! i have an idea, cause i changed in my car mitsubishi and is only one,in the civic are like 3.

haha i got that car i sold that peace of sht
How to change the belt of accesories on a honda civic 96?
I actually just did that on my 96 civic yesterday, its actually real easy, the power steering pump and alternator, all you have to do is loosen the mounting and adjusting bolt, swing it back and take the belt off, and for the AC belt you need to loosen the bolt on the pully (the one on the top, not the crank and not the compressor pulley, the remaining one) and pull the belt off. To get the AC belt all the way off you need to unbolt the mount that goes from the AC to the body and just slip the belt over that. Installation is reverse of removal

Can I replace my serpentine belt in my 2001 pontiac grand am by myself?

Is this a hard thing to do? Me and my wife would do the work, and when I ask several ppl they say its a fairly easy task? Is it? I am pretty good at doing things myself, like spark plugs and oil changes.

If you can do an oil change you can change a belt.

Go to a parts store and get a repair manual and go home and sit down and do some reading up on it, it will show everything you should know about changing it out in the book but if you have any doubt about doing it either find someone that can do it or take it to a repair shop.

Anyone know how to loosen the serpentine belt on a taurus wagon?

I just bought an older (1999) ford taurus wagon and need to change the alternator. Where do they hide the bolts to adjust the tension of the idler? And are there any simple tricks to removing or replacing these alternators?

    Thanks a bunch.
Anyone know how to loosen the serpentine belt on a taurus wagon?
you need a special tool if you go to just about any auto parts store you can buy a kit it comes with all the sockets and handles that you will need you might not use it alot but you will be glad you have it when you need it....... all the other ideas could work but it is so close to the strut tower just by the kit it will save you money in band-aids
Anyone know how to loosen the serpentine belt on a taurus wagon?
stick a 3/8 ratchet in the hole and move it to make it looser. you can't adjust the tension. They are set, you just rotate it with a ratchet.
it takes a special wrench but you should be able to push it in the direction to loosen it with your hand spring loaded try that.
in the middle of your tension-er there is a bolt get a wrench.and simply turn the bolt and that will give you play to remove your belt .there is no way to adjust that spring loaded tension-er pulley..if its bad replace it..good luck
the hole doug w. is talking about is in the belt tensioner,it may be 1/2 instead of 3/8 i just helped my son change a belt on his 95 couger %26amp; it was 1/2.just put the breaker bar or ratchet in the square hole in the tensioner %26amp; rotate clockwise to loosen the preload off of the tensioner %26amp; the belt comes right off!
there are two types of tensioner adjusters.one type has a squre hole cut out in it so you can insert a rachet or breaker bar into it and either push or pull to release tension.the other type has a hex head bolt on it usually a 14mm socket on a rachet will dp the trick and again you either push or pull
The tensioner is spring loaded, use a break bar or ratchet to pull the tensioner in and release the belt. This is a square hole the size of the ratchet

HOW TO CHANGE OR REPLACE THE SERPENTINE BELT ON A 1994 CAMARO
    1994 camaro serpentine belt?
Draw a diagram of the way the belt is on now. Use a 1/2%26quot; or 3/4%26quot; ratchet and a pipe that will fit over the end of the ratchet handle. You will see a square hole to place the drive end of the ratchet into and push or pull to remove and replace the belt. Look for a pulley that has an arm and spring attached to it. That is your tension pulley. On the face you will see the hole. Easy repair once you do it once. No need to pay the $50.00 to $100.00 a shop will demand.

you need an automobile repair manual for that year and make of car to do this, as it is too hard to explain in here.
Follow the advice the others have offered here AND!!!! check to see if there is a belt routing diagram on a sticker under the hood somewhere. A real kick in the A$$ when you try to put the belt back on and forget how it was routed.........LOL.

gates is the best belt in the world there should be a diagram under the hood for your belt routing and normally all you need is a 3/8 socket wrench to do the job
The cost could go from 100.00 to 200.00 $ This belt can be a D.I.Y. job,On the hood ,or in front of raditor is a belt routing lable. It's a very tight spaced job,but pray first,

OK step 1 find a idler belt pully that has a square sholder on it,this is the adjuster,it should have a 3/8 o1/2 ratched hole in it. Step 2 Find a tool to fit in it , move it up or down. You will see it losen the belt in one direction. Step 3 Once you find out, losen tention, ease belt off alt, because it is the smallest pully.Pay close attention how belt is routed.pay close att:to water pump belt routing very important!!! Take Belt with you to your nearest advanced auto parts dealer or auto zone or NAPA. Let the tech match up belt for you. Step 4 reverse the process.Be carfull not to get finger under belt when setting tention. Leave alt pully for last.If you do not have a belt routing digram ask for a copy at auto parts .Good luck and GOD Bless... hoped i've helped.....

  • V and Serpentine belt in my Dodge neon?

I went to get my oil changed and the mechanic said that my v belt and my serpentine belt are recommended to get changed. What exactly do these belts do? About how much do they cost to replace? Will i know when one of them goes out if i wait to replace it? Thanks
V and Serpentine belt in my Dodge neon?
They are two types of belts that do the same thing-drive the various things that cars have on them-AC compressors, alternators, airpumps, power steering pumps, and sometimes even vacuum pumps.

Being rubber, they have a limited lifespan, and should be replaced about every 3 years.

    My serpentine belt is cracked?

It is only a small crack, and tomorrow i have a Trip from NC to NY. Should I postpone the trip one day, or take the trip and change the belt once I get to NY?
    My serpentine belt is cracked?
small cracks on the underside is normal for a high mileage belt. :( you should replace it when you can
    My serpentine belt is cracked?
If the crack is across the grooves it is considered 'normal'. If it's on the other side of the belt then you should change it soon.

ADDITION: Buy one and carry it with you with the tool you need to change it. Just in case.
It depends on how bad the crack is, usually I would replace it..but since you have the trip, you might not have time. Be prepared to get it done when you return and hopefully it holds out until then.
i would sud jest bringing a wallet ... you never know.... if it has been there for a while you wouldn't know... so dint think about it... cross your fingers... go for the ride... just be prepared to break down just in case... and dint push your car... take your time...
Delay the trip and get it replaced! The serpentine belt runs the car...if it snaps while on the trip, you will be stuck wherever this happens.
Serp belts only take a few minutes to change if you have a 1/2 inch drive rachet or breaker bar. If it breaks on the road the headache factor greatly outweights the prevent maintenance factor. Serp belts drive the alternator, A/C, water pump etc. It takes less time to change than to fuel up. Change it now.

    A21
Just change it before you leave.....if you want to you can try to take the trip and be risky...but if something happens and you are in the middle of nowhere you will be in worse trouble. They aren't that expensive or hard to change. See if a friend knows how....have a good trip either way! Good luck and be safe! Mandy
you shouldn't have to postpone your trip for a serpentine belt it onlt take like 15 minutes on most vehilcles.
Neither. It takes ten minutes to change the belt. Get one right now and take care of it.

How do you change the serpentine belts on a 99 chrysler sebring.I can't loosen tensioner.?

Cover everything u can then spray behind the tensioner and the nut infront with a penetrating oil spray. Wait a few hrs and try again.

If this doesn't work then attach a Long pipe, about 24 inches, at the end of your ratchet. Hold the ratchet against the nut while u push the pipe on the other end to loosen it very easily.

What way does the serpentine belt go on a 1995 Pontiac Grand am?
the sticker will be on the left hand side on the front suspension thing cap or whatever you want to call it if its not then its goes around the alternator on the top of power steering pump pulley then under water pump pulley around a/c compressor than goes to the engine drive pulley and around it ( big pulley and made of metal on the bottom middle of the engine)and then don't get confused goes the rough side up on the tensioner

There is usually a diagram under the hood somewhere. You can probably find one on the Gates Belt site. Look at the link below.

Go to the dealership and ask to look at the service manual. It has a correct diagram in it or you can order a new diagram to go on the radiator frame.
Always OVER the supercharger pulley and OVER the crank pulley. The rest you should be able to figure out.

I've never seen a supercharger pulley have a belt under it...it would slip too much. I can vouch that all roots type superchargers have belts over the pulley; it's not going to be any different on centrifugals. You have a roots charger, most factory superchargers are roots type (on GM mainly eaton m92s and m62s).

Here's a shot of series 2 engine, as you can tell the routing is kind of insane. Should be similar to this. 2 belts.

    I'm not sure a bout price , maybe $50 labor .

But it is harder to work on front wheel drives (sideways motors) then rear wheel drives. The front of the motors is crammed up against the wheel well, so its a smaller gap to work with.

You maybe able to do it yourself, and the auto parts store will loan you the tools to do small easy repairs.

A books is only $10 and well worth the information in the long run of things.

How do you install the serpentine belt on a 1995 Chevy barreta 2.2l engine?

How do you install the serpentine belt on a 1995 Chevy barreta 2.2l engine?
If you look on the engine there will be a belt tensioner pulley that is smaller than the other pulleys. this is spring loaded and adjusts by use of a 3/8%26quot; ratchet. you line up the new belt and release the tension on the pulley, and then install belt around the pulleys and then let the tension come back by letting the tensioner %26quot;go%26quot;. the spring loaded action should give your belt the proper amount of tension. Hope this helps
How do you install the serpentine belt on a 1995 Chevy barreta 2.2l engine?
there should be a sticker around the top of the radiator area(under the hood) showing the belt configuation
There should be a picture under the hood of how the belt should look on the pulleys
usually in a small car like that all you have to do is push down on the pulley
There is usually a diagram under the hood of the car. Usually on the radiator cover or the strut mounts.Get the belt on the bottom ,or lowest pulleys first. Then keeping tention on the belt feed it on to the next pully up. If the pulley has grooves then of course thats the part the ribbed side of the belt should touch. Smoo is the back side of the belt. look for a diagram that looks like the one on this web site.

First you need a long wrench or a regular wrench with a cheater bar that will fit the idler pulley. Install the belt according to the diagram under the hood leaving out the idler pulley. When the belt is around all pulleys, use the wrench to rotate the idler pulley until you can get the belt underneath of it. It is there to create tension. Thats the only way anybody does it.

If you look by the crankshaft pulley, power steering side, you will find stud that sticks out about an inch or two. When you put the belt on you may have the belt riding on that part of the stud. I've done that on crown Vic's with 4.6L.

  • I have a 1999 Plymouth. When is the best time to change a serpentine belt? Mine has a nice line of rust on it.

The best wear indicators for a serpentine belt are the cracks that form on the part of the belt travelling in the pulley grooves. If you can see little ropes or strings when you inspect the belt, then definitely replace it. If the flat surface of the belt is very shiny, dry, and cracking, it is a good time to change it. This indicates heat damage to the rubber--nothing lasts forever.

Even though a belt may look sound, you must realize that it is subjected to very nasty dynamic loads from the accessories. It looks like the belt is just churning along at a constant speed to the naked eye, but it is acting like a clutch between the engine, alternator, power steering, and especially the A/C compressor (if present.) Lock-to-lock parking lot turns cause the power steering pump overflow valve to open at high pressure, loading down the belt. Electrical load changes also can surge-load the belt, like cooling fans turning on and off and the rear window defroster. The start-up torque of an A/C compressor is very high, and the difference in speed between the belt and the compressor shaft can be high before the compressor clutch engages. These dynamic loads are the unseen factor which cause catastrophic failure at the least opportune times.... When in doubt, a $30 serpentine belt is a wise investment for a more secure feeling driving down the road.

How do I losen the serpentine belt on a 97 chevy cavilier?

I am changing the alternator on a 97 Chev Cavilier. Basically which pulley is the tension pulley and what is procedure for releasing it.
How do I losen the serpentine belt on a 97 chevy cavilier?
There should be a pulley bracket with a square hole in it.

The square hole is where you put a ratchet or breakover bar.

Then you can pull or push on the tensioner pulley to take the tension off the belt.

Some tensioners you can just put a wrench on the screw that holds the pulley on the bracket.

If there is a square hole in the bracket...use the square hole.

Note:sometimes the square hole is on the backside of the bracket.
How do I losen the serpentine belt on a 97 chevy cavilier?
I just have to know how the hell do you think you can change an alternator if you cant even find the belt tensioner. How do you know what the alternator is? Good luck
There's always some way to get a wrench on the tensioner. Then you just have to turn it to loosen it while you slip the belt off. It can be fun trying to do it yourself.
Dave is right. this is one of the hardest belt i have done, you must get the belt on the engine pulley first and then go to the other pulleys.

I tried to change the serpentine belt on my car, but...?

even though i hear its pretty easy this belt that broke on my isuzu trooper 98 its goes a little inside the engine somewhere or some like that it looks like i have to take something off to do it, am i just better off taking it to a mechanic, is fo how much will it cost me to just change it if i already have the belt?
I tried to change the serpentine belt on my car, but...?
If the belt only charges your battery and ac, it is safe to drive it to the service station. You still run the risk of your battery dying though.

If that broken belt drives your waterpump, STOP! You will overheat and damage your engine. Have it towed or fixed there.

The belt likely drives your power steering, so consider this.
I tried to change the serpentine belt on my car, but...?
It ususally not easy and it also not cheap to get done. on my daughters 89 Chrysler lebaron it was $300 plus the belt
I believe the Trooper is a rear wheel drive car. If so the belt would be a piece of cake to change. If its front wheel drive with the engine in sideways it could be tricky-i generally just pass that off to my friend to fix when one of my front wheel drive cars snaps a fan belt.

Regardless in either case a mechanic/garage is gonna soak you for hundreds. They are rip off artists.

I have read this question and your other question related to this and i would like to let you know that all of these people telling you that you are gonna destroy your car by trying to drive it for 2 miles without the belt have no clue what they are talking about. If the car is cold when you first start it there is no way it could overheat within 2 miles. No way at all. I drove mine for around 7 miles the other day without the belt-did not even start to get hot. Just make it a straight trip-dont give the car time to warm up or anything. Just jump in it, start it and go. If that car would overheat and damage the engine within 2 miles i would buy you a new engine-cause i know it just cant happen. 20 miles might be pushing it--2 miles no way would it hurt anything.

On the other hand your serpentine belt turns your alternator which keeps your battery charged. Without it your battery could go dead quite quick leaving you stranded. If your battery is good and strong it will be ok for 2 miles-regardless you might want to have someone follow you just in case.
its easy just get a wrench usually a 5/8 and the diagram is

usually some where on the front of the engine compartment

on top of the radiator housing.

Which way to turn the Auto Tensioner to loosen belt?

I have a 2002 Toyota camry (4 cyl). I want to change the serpentine belt(Only 1 belt). So I want to know which way do I turn the auto tensioner(spring loaded) to loosen the belt. Please answer if you know. Every car is different. Thanks
Which way to turn the Auto Tensioner to loosen belt?
All you need is a 3/8 drive breaker bar and a short piece of pipe. insert drive into tensioner down by pulley, add pipe on end for extra leverage, push or pull to relieve tension, remove belt. release tension.

Place new belt on, move tensioner by breaker bar so belt can be installed, release tension, remove tool
Which way to turn the Auto Tensioner to loosen belt?
If you can't work out which way the tensioner loads the belt you shouldn't be attempting to change it, but if you must, then a tip, sketch all the pulleys and run of the belt, to aid fitting of new belt,(it could save a lot of hair pulling later)
You should be able to figure this out pretty easy if you turn to the left and the belt gets tighter and you aren't able to move it then it goes to the right to loosen and install the new belt.
That belt drives most of the engine. Unless you have sufficient experience, I'd recommend allowed an expert do the work.
Turn it so the pulley moves away from the belt.
can go two ways one is tight other loose not hard to see which is loose

pull hard one way no loose try other way simple

What is the socket size for a 2006 Toyota Corolla belt tension pulley?

I'm trying to change the serpentine belt on my 06 Toyota Corolla. I don't seem to have the right size/type socket for the tension pulley. I believe that it is a torx socket (Or female star socket) but I'm not sure. Anyone have any idea what the correct socket is for said car?
What is the socket size for a 2006 Toyota Corolla belt tension pulley?
it takes a 19mm socket not a torx. and the other guy is right as long it is under 3years or 36k it is still under warranty

If it`s a 06 why are you doing it yourself? It is still under warranty.

  • Can't get enough slack to replace the serpentine belt on my '94 Ram 1500. Please help?

My boyfriend and I love working on my truck. This old V8 looks and sounds like its brand new because I treat it as I would treat a ferarri. That is why its so depressing and embarrassing that I have not been able to change the serpentine belt.

I loosen the tensioner as far as it will go, while my BF pulls as hard as he can to mount it to the smooth %26quot;wheel%26quot; above the water pump. We are just mere centimeters from getting it, but the belt simply will not give any more. I double-checked the print on the belt to make sure I have the right size, and it says it is.

Does anyone have any tips for installing it? I have tried to unbolt the smooth %26quot;wheel%26quot; and put the belt on that way, and try to re-bolt the wheel, but I still have not had much luck that way, other than mildly stripping the threads of the bolt.

    If this is the correct diagram for your truck;

try routing the belt over everything but the Alternator, then slip it over that while the tensioner is held. Like most vehicles, this is the smallest pulley, and that usually works best. Most brand new belts have very little %26quot;extra%26quot; slack.

If it is really and truly the right belt try a SMALL amount of Vaseline on the water pump pulley make sure the belt is siting right on all the other pulleys first. You can also have one person try to put the belt on while the other turns the engine BY HAND.
Take it to a real auto tech and problem solved.
Double check your routing. If it's the right belt it should go one with no problem.
check the routing or wrong belt could possibly need tensionor they like to rust

How do you change a 04 Camry fan belt?

I'm unable to find a Chilton manual book. Does anyone know how I go about changing the serpentine fan belt?
How do you change a 04 Camry fan belt?
Toyota puts a diagram of the belt under hood. It is straight forward, need 1/2 drive breaker bar and diagram, Five minutes you will be done. If diagram gone take a picture for reference.
How do you change a 04 Camry fan belt?
first of all the Camry does not have a fan belt . An alternator belt is more like it . There should be a diagram around the engine compartment that can tell you how to install a new belt
